EFFECTS OF IMMIGRATION

a. What is a tenement house? (You may have to search other sites to answer this question)
b.. How did immigration lead to the creation of tenement housing?
c. What is life like for new immigrants in the early 1900's? What is life like in tenement housing?
d. What potential obstacles can you see for recently arrived immigrants in the early 1900s?

a) A tenement is a small run-down apartment occupying a small portion of a building which is usually very crowded and messy. It usually contains many family members living together. They are also usually affordable.
b) Immigration lead to the creation of tenement housing because as many people started migrating to America, more places had to be built in order to give shelter and home to families. They must also be affordable because not many immigrants have much money to afford expensive apartments/tenements.
c) Life for new immigrants in the early 1900's is tolerable. It is not the best, but it keeps them going. For example, many have jobs so they are able to pay for their needs such as food, rent, etc. But, life in the tenement housings are awful. Though it is tolerable, living in the tenements is something every immigrant doesn't want to do because the place is very crowded; and with many people living together, it is hard to keep the place clean.
d) Potential obstacles for recently arrived immigrants in the early 1900's is finding a job and looking for a place to live. Fitting in does not matter all that much becuase many people are immigrating to America that not many people are the same. Also, since may other immigrants are migrating, competition for jobs and houses will occur because not many jobs will be available if everyone wants it and are already in search of it; same for the house/tenements.
